How I make 1000 a day online as a music teacher

In 2020 my voice coaching business all but tanked. Seriously, it took around three weeks at the start of that year to go from fully booked to less than FIVE students a week ongoing.

Oh yeah, and did I mention we had our first kid on the way? My Wife had quit her job in court transcription because the studio was doing so well? My dad was given a terminal diagnosis?

Shit hit the fan and QUICKLY.

This awful, stressful, DEVASTATING situation wasn't going to turn itself around on it's own - so I started scrambling.

More videos and content.

More emails.

More sales.

Thousands in paid advertising.

... and for a moment there, I thought I'd worked it out - financially, we were back on even ground with the studio and I started filling out my studio calendar BIG time.

Until the piper came calling - the piper of TIME that is.

It's one thing to put $100 into paid advertising and turn that into $200 - but when you're a music teacher charging $100 an hour, the reality of that math goes pear shaped very quickly like it did for me.

If you put $100 into paid ads, WHERE did that $100 come from in the first place? If you're charging $100 an hour, you spent an hour of your time to earn it, right? So, you're $100 down from where you should be, and you're an hour down from where you should be right from the start.

This means when you make two sales, or $200 - you were in the red from the start, so that first $100 simply brings you back to zero/makes back the money you spent on the ad. The second $100 you make becomes profit at this point.

But really, you've worked 3 hours for $100 profit - you're actually earning something like $33 an hour.

Now, when you worked out that you needed an extra 5 students a week to hit your financial goals, you didn't factor in TIME. Now that your hourly rate has been split down by two thirds, you actually need to coach FIFTEEN new students to hit your mark.

In this scenario, you're not REALLY turning $1 into $2 as the great internet marketing gurus all say - what you're doing is cutting down the profit margin on your time, which for you as a music teacher is severely limited.

You see, booking out my calendar so hard in this time put me in the position of working Sunday mornings, night-times, 5/6/7 days a week in some cases simply to pay off the massive amount of money I was dumping into ads in the first place.

When the expenses, ads and tax bills started coming in for this period - I was right back in the red again, but with MONTHS of prepaid coaching that I needed to fulfill before I could take on any more students and start making sales again.

I'd screwed myself over timewise simply to buy Zuckerberg a new boat with my ad-spend.

Now, we started this out talking about $1000 a day, and that's exactly where I found myself after making ONE simple change in my message/content, and ONE simply change to the OFFER that I was making my students.

Prior to 2020, I had been making technical voice coaching content - all about technique, terms and the science of the whole thing. 

I kindof enjoyed it, but, I kept getting the WRONG students coming my way - they just wanted cold hard facts and anatomy, and if you've ever tried learning how to sing, it's about something FAR deeper than simply which muscle to use. These students often became problematic for me, despite my best efforts to help them - they just didn't take my advice and kept coming at me with Wikipedia articles and science reports.

As a rock teacher, I thought that was kinda weird.

Until I realised that's EXACTLY who my content was speaking to.

So, I pivoted in my content to talk directly TO my ideal student - rock singers who wanted to tour the world and make records.

I started making content about the rigors of touring, how to care for your instrument, even stagecraft and recording studio housekeeping as a vocalist.

Sure, this content doesn't have a massive reach, and it's definitely not for your average karaoke singer.

But it IS speaking directly to the singers that I'm best equipped and qualified to work with - real singers out there playing live and making a real go of it with their voices in the real world.

The direct reflection I got back in my content by speaking to my ideal students was mind boggling. Initialy it was a mistake - in a moment of weakness, I posted a video talking about my frustration, anxiety and stress - and how this had been efecting my own voice as a rock singer; and this immediately spoke to a different audience that I started getting a direct reflection back from. 

When I posted that video about anxiety, I started getting TONS of emails and messages from singers saying "holy crap, I thought you were just a natural and SUPER confident - I've got no excuse but to work with you now!" and "your story is my story! How can we get started together?"

I stopped running ads at this point and started focusing on creating content for the kind of students that I really wanted to work with.

And it's paid off in spades - my students are out touring the world and making records professionally.

No really, I've carved a niche for myself as the go-to voice coach for top-level rock singers who are having an issue with their voice on tour - I've even been out on tour and to shows when my students come through Australia and done live coaching on the road with them, and live coaching in the recording studio.

From guys on Wikipedia in their mother's basement to working with some of my own all-time favourite singers knocking on my door begging for help with their voices.

So first up, if you want to make 1000 a day online as a music teacher - the FIRST thing you need to do is work out exactly who you're speaking to with your content, and start aligning your message with the EXACT student and client you want to work with.

Secondly, you need to make them an offer they simply can't refuse.

Now, when a singer comes my way saying they need help singing high notes - instead of saying "sure, I charge $100 an hour", I work out what their REAL goal and objectives are. Basically, "WHY do you want to sing high notes?"

From there, we can work out a timeframe, put a fullstop on that goal - and I can make them the offer of a lifetime.

Oh yeah, while charging for RESULTS rather than my time as a teacher.

This approach has not only facilitated automated sales of $1000 a day - it's also changed my STUDENTS' lives by helping them actually achieve their real hopes, dreams and desires - not just helping them run a few scales on the piano together and kicking them out the door when the hour is up.
